The Dar Al Nur Building Campaign
Twenty-seven years of prayer. Not one room of our own for daily prayers.
Since 1999 our community has prayed, taught and raised its children in rented suites off Little River Turnpike. We have produced huffadh who lead Taraweeh across this region — from a space we have never owned. We are buying our permanent home in the DMV. With $196,000 already given and a property sale about to close, we are a third of the way there.

Inside the center
Circles that have run every week for twenty-seven years
Boys and girls sit with their teachers around an open mus-haf. It is the same shape our huffadh learned in before they went on to lead Taraweeh in masajid across this region — and it is the thing a building of our own would finally give room to.
On a busy weekend these two circles, the Tahfeez group and Jumu’ah all want the same carpet on the same morning. That is the whole case for a larger building, in one picture.
مَنْ بَنَى مَسْجِدًا لِلَّهِ بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ

Why now
Rent built someone else’s equity for twenty-two years
We have been tenants at the Rock Spring Professional Center for more than two decades. Through COVID the doors closed and the rent did not stop. Every month we stay is a month our children learn in a space we can lose.
We have outgrown the suite
Qur’an school, Tahfeez, sisters’ halaqa and Jumu’ah all share the same rooms on the same afternoons. Families are turned away for lack of space, not lack of interest.
Rising costs, no asset
Rent and operating costs climb every year against a lease we do not control. A building of our own turns that expense into something the community owns outright.
Accessibility and welcome
A purpose-built center means proper wudu facilities, a dedicated sisters’ space, accessible entry, parking and rooms that can hold the whole community at once.

Older students and professionals paired with teenagers navigating school and faith.

Our story
From a Somali community association to a center for all of Northern Virginia
Founded as the Somali Muslim Association of North America
A handful of families create a place for prayer, Qur’anic study and community in Northern Virginia — serving a population that had nowhere else to gather.
Twenty-two years as tenants at Rock Spring
Classes, lectures and Jumu’ah run continuously out of rented professional-center suites, with programs added every year the community asked for one.
Our huffadh lead Taraweeh across the region
Students who learned their first surahs here go on to memorize the entire Qur’an and lead the night prayer in masajid throughout the DMV.
Closed by COVID, billed by the landlord
The doors shut and the rent continued. The experience made the case for ownership impossible to put off any longer.
Sale in progress, $196,000 raised, searching for our building
A property sale expected to net $650,000 is underway, and the community has given $196,000 so far. We are looking for the right facility in the heart of the DMV and raising the $1,654,000 balance.
